A Poem for My Mother on Her 60th Birthday

Held fast

since before birth

Held close

in touch and heart

I was your heart

outside of your body

30 years of life

filled time between you and me

Our souls not yet met or intertwined

Only now, as I bear down

upon 30 myself, do I understand

how much life you lived before me

How much more you've always known

How much more I should have asked

or told

or listened

I'm finally caught up to you

to where you were

when my life started

A life doubled

A life of love, of laughter and tears

Of tender looks and embraces

Of beauty and decay and lost time

and of times that will be remembered

always.

Our souls will keep dancing together

long past what we know,

Forever mother and daughter.

I love you.
